You’re at a beach in sunny Florida, basking in the glorious rays with a cool drink in your hand. Out of the corner of your eye you spot a young teenager with his little sister walking down the beach. The rascal sneakily scoops down and picks up something from the beach, tiptoeing hurriedly towards his sister.

Aloe is a household commodity, especially if you live in The Sunshine State and aren’t a very skilled sunblock-applier (I speak from experience). Aloe is more than just a handy thing to alleviate sunburn pain. The ancient Egyptians often referred to aloe as the “plant of immortality.” That’s quite a compliment, but for the Egyptians, the description fit perfectly considering all of the amazing things aloe can do for the skin.

Many synthetic moisturizers often leave a greasy residue on the skin. It’s quite amazing that this naturally-occuring plant can provide the same exact results without that sticky, slimy feeling.

As you may have deduced, coconut oil is often ingested as a health supplement, providing tons of benefits. But did you know it can also be topically applied to the skin as well?

Crack open one of these brown beauties and spread the innards on your face for a moisturizer that’s way healthier than the store-bought stuff (quite effective, too). It can be used as a conditioner for soft, flowing hair, or even as a sunscreen, having the ability to block about 20% of the sun’s ultraviolet rays.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfates (or SLS) is an additive included in almost every cosmetic product that allows the substance to foam or lather. You may have even picked up the dispenser at dinner and pondered what makes “sea salt” different than traditional table salt. Can there really be that much of a difference? While you may not be able to taste a difference, the two are worlds apart — literally. 

Sea salt comes from the ocean, while table salt is mined from salt deposits in the earth. Ocean water evaporates, leaving sea salt rich with minerals and loads of healthy, natural qualities — something that’s inevitably lost during the manufacturing process of table salt.

In our last blog post, we touched briefly on the “prebiotic effect”; the process of friendly bacteria overcoming harmful bacteria to create balance and a healing environment on your pet’s skin and fur.

I am so thrilled that there is this wonderful product called Petbiotics! My dog, Callie, is a Cluminger, which is a cross between a Clumber Spaniel and a Springer Spaniel. For those of you who have Spaniels, you can sympathize with me when I tell you that she has bad skin. She breaks out into giant red bumps all over her stomach when she is outside rolling around in the grass or local mud hole. One of her favorite things to do is to lounge in our pool or take a plunge in the lake. While this is extremely enjoyable for her, unfortunately her skin doesn’t love it so much. All the moisture from the water irritates her skin so badly that the yeast overgrows and gets infected.

I used a dozen or more different products in an attempt to keep her skin and coat clean and healthy. A few vet visits and hundreds of dollars later, her skin would temporarily clear up only to get bad again after more swimming and outside play.

Mia, the sweetest labradoodle on earth:

The most lovable pup also turned out to be the biggest inspiration for Petbiotics.

My husband has highly-sensitive pet allergies that, as our family grew, limited us from certain breeds of dogs. We didn’t let this stand in the way of our love for animals, though. It just led us in a different direction as we set our sights on hypoallergenic breeds.

As we were picking up a tiny black ball of fur, we had no idea how quickly it would be before our entire family fell in love with her. She is sweet, mild-mannered, extremely submissive, and perfect for our family.

While my husband and I were in talks regarding prebiotic formulas, one of the biggest reasons we started Petbiotics was really for dogs just like Mia.
