Let me paint a picture for you.

You’re at a beach in sunny Florida, basking in the glorious rays with a cool drink in your hand. Out of the corner of your eye you spot a young teenager with his little sister walking down the beach. The rascal sneakily scoops down and picks up something from the beach, tiptoeing hurriedly towards his sister.

You know where this is going.

A moment later, a shrill scream, followed by some frenetic jumping and repeated commands to “Get it off!” mingle with the sound of the waves. As soon as the sister realizes the slimy green creature landing on her neck was just a bundle of seaweed, she quickly turns ferocious, punching her hysterical brother in the arm.

Seaweed. What a degrading name. Little did this girl know that this slimy, green bundle of joy that landed on her may have been the best possible thing for her skin. Call it gross, but seaweed (more scientifically known as kelp) has tremendous health benefits that many people overlook. This makes it a crucial ingredient in Petbiotics’ game-changing prebiotic formula.

Kelp is a mineral-rich algae that resides deep under the ocean. It has a trademark brown hue (hence the reason why our formula may be tinted brown) and on certain beaches, will often get washed up onto the shore.

The benefits of kelp can be attributed to the fact that it acts as functional sponge, absorbing over time all of the nutrients present in the surround ocean waters. For this reason, organic skincare companies have quickly discovered and taken advantage of its natural skin-softening qualities (including us!). It also promotes the healthy growth of fur, skin, and nails.

As a living plant, the kelp acts as a catalyst for the “prebiotic effect,” stimulating the growth of healthy bacteria (read more about what healthy bacteria can do here).

Brown? Sure. Gross? Sure. Incredible for your pet’s health? Absolutely.

I probably don’t need to argue for the value of including aloe in our formula, but I’m gonna do it anyway, because it’s just that incredible.

Aloe is a household commodity, especially if you live in The Sunshine State and aren’t a very skilled sunblock-applier (I speak from experience). Aloe is more than just a handy thing to alleviate sunburn pain. The ancient Egyptians often referred to aloe as the “plant of immortality.” That’s quite a compliment, but for the Egyptians, the description fit perfectly considering all of the amazing things aloe can do for the skin.

Many synthetic moisturizers often leave a greasy residue on the skin. It’s quite amazing that this naturally-occuring plant can provide the same exact results without that sticky, slimy feeling.

As well being chock full of valuable minerals and proteins, aloe vera has been known to help treat the following skin conditions:

psoriasis

eczema

dandruff

psoriasis

canker sores

skin ulcers

As you might expect, it was no-brainer whether or not to include this wonder-drug in our prebiotic formula.

If you’re active in the organic world, there’s no doubt you’ve experienced the buzz surrounding coconut oil. Health professionals, nutritionists, and even celebrities have used this wonder-drug in so many different ways, it’d be a shorter list to name the things coconut oil can’t do.

As you may have deduced, coconut oil is often ingested as a health supplement, providing tons of benefits. But did you know it can also be topically applied to the skin as well?

Crack open one of these brown beauties and spread the innards on your face for a moisturizer that’s way healthier than the store-bought stuff (quite effective, too). It can be used as a conditioner for soft, flowing hair, or even as a sunscreen, having the ability to block about 20% of the sun’s ultraviolet rays.

Okay, you get the picture. It has a lot of health benefits (hence the title of this blog post). So why did we just have to include it in our exclusive Petbiotics formula?

Sodium Lauryl Sulfates (or SLS) is an additive included in almost every cosmetic product that allows the substance to foam or lather. If you’ve ever wondered what causes transparent shampoo to get thick and bubbly in your hair, it’s this chemical. Unfortunately, studies have shown that SLS is at least a skin irritant in concentrated doses, and at worse possibly carcinogenic to humans. Ingesting it may also cause nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. We don’t want our pets anywhere near this stuff.

We’ve kicked SLS to the curb and replaced it instead with coconut oil; the natural lathering agent in all of our Petbiotics and Aleavia products.

All in all, coconut oil contains manifold benefits and doubles as a lathering agent. If it’s good enough for supermodel Miranda Kerr… well, we think it’s good enough for your four-legged friend!

It’s highly likely that you have sea salt somewhere in your house.

You may have even picked up the dispenser at dinner and pondered what makes “sea salt” different than traditional table salt. Can there really be that much of a difference? While you may not be able to taste a difference, the two are worlds apart — literally.

Sea salt comes from the ocean, while table salt is mined from salt deposits in the earth. Ocean water evaporates, leaving sea salt rich with minerals and loads of healthy, natural qualities — something that’s inevitably lost during the manufacturing process of table salt.

In our last blog post, we touched briefly on the “prebiotic effect”; the process of friendly bacteria overcoming harmful bacteria to create balance and a healing environment on your pet’s skin and fur.

If this prebiotic effect is a boxing match, sea salt is the right-hook that guarantees a knockout of infectious and harmful skin conditions. In our exclusive formula, the sea salt acts in part as a “clean-up crew.” After your pet’s friendly bacteria dominate all of that nasty, infectious bacteria, they often leave a few million dead skin cells in their wake. Thankfully, sea salt is naturally absorbent and acts as a skilled exfoliator, absorbing toxins and exfoliating dead skin cells. The result is — you guessed it — soft, supple, irresistably cuddly skin and fur on your pet.

But the benefits of sea salt aren’t just skin deep.

At Petbiotics, we make a big deal (and rightly so) about your pet’s pH levels being balanced (we’ll publish a post later on diving into why this is so crucial). Therefore, the alkalizing nature of sea salt makes us love it even more. Not only does it provide many skin benefits, but it helps reverse high levels of acid in the body as well. That nasty bacteria I mentioned earlier loves acidic environments.

We could go on and on about how sea salt strengthens the immune system, helps fight depression, eases respiratory issues and even strengthens bones and nails, but that would take all day.

Truly, sea salt is one of nature’s best kept (and healthiest) secrets. We want to ride that wave.

I am so thrilled that there is this wonderful product called Petbiotics! My dog, Callie, is a Cluminger, which is a cross between a Clumber Spaniel and a Springer Spaniel. For those of you who have Spaniels, you can sympathize with me when I tell you that she has bad skin. She breaks out into giant red bumps all over her stomach when she is outside rolling around in the grass or local mud hole. One of her favorite things to do is to lounge in our pool or take a plunge in the lake. While this is extremely enjoyable for her, unfortunately her skin doesn’t love it so much. All the moisture from the water irritates her skin so badly that the yeast overgrows and gets infected.

I used a dozen or more different products in an attempt to keep her skin and coat clean and healthy. A few vet visits and hundreds of dollars later, her skin would temporarily clear up only to get bad again after more swimming and outside play.

Petbiotics cleared her skin up within the first week. I washed her twice weekly with the Lavender Dog Shampoo and used the Topical Spray twice a day on the infected areas. The giant bumps that were puss-filled on her stomach (yuck) started to dry up and were completely gone within two weeks. One added bonus was that Callie looked like she had been bleached! Her normally dingy white fur looked so bright white I couldn’t believe it! Now that I have been using the shampoo and spray regularly, Callie’s coat has never looked better. I love these products!

When someone says “bacteria,” what comes to your mind? If you’re a parent, you might think of your chid knocked out cold with a sinus infection or any number of pathogenic illnesses. It’s safe to say that bacteria has got a pretty bad rap. You may have heard rumors and whispers, however, of an alleged “good bacteria.”

As it turns out, our bodies are filled with microorganisms (bacteria) that work to balance our internal systems. Good bacteria in the colon is one of the biggest helps to preventing harmful, infectious bacteria from reproducing.

If you’re privy to natural medicine, you’ve probably heard of probiotics; ingestible microorganisms that rebalance the healthy bacteria in your gut. Healthy bacteria are essential for preventing the proliferation of bad bacteria (such as salmonella and E. coli) and maintaining the overall health of your body’s internal organs and systems.

We were fascinated by the incredible benefits of probiotics and landed on the question: What if probiotics could heal and restore other parts of the body, as well?

To our surprise and delight, we found that topical applications of our finely-tuned prebiotic formula produced incredible results for those with skin conditions (both humans and animals!).

The formula for Petbiotics works as catalyst, begetting the growth of good bacteria that overcome the unhealthy bacteria, process the dead skin cells and destroy contaminates remaining on your pet’s skin (research exactly how this happens).

The result is optimal skin and fur health through all-natural ingredients. It’s this finely-tuned brew of organic goodies that restores your pet to health.

What each of these all-natural ingredients contribute to the health of your pet is remarkable, but it’s the combination of all of them that produce the incredible “prebiotic effect.”

In the next few weeks, I’ll be taking each ingredient and unpacking exactly what it does to benefit the skin and fur of your pet. We know that the first step to wellness is education, and we intend to make it as fun, beneficial, and informative as we possibly can.

Mia, the sweetest labradoodle on earth:

The most lovable pup also turned out to be the biggest inspiration for Petbiotics.

My husband has highly-sensitive pet allergies that, as our family grew, limited us from certain breeds of dogs. We didn’t let this stand in the way of our love for animals, though. It just led us in a different direction as we set our sights on hypoallergenic breeds.

As we were picking up a tiny black ball of fur, we had no idea how quickly it would be before our entire family fell in love with her. She is sweet, mild-mannered, extremely submissive, and perfect for our family.

While my husband and I were in talks regarding prebiotic formulas, one of the biggest reasons we started Petbiotics was really for dogs just like Mia. We loved her dearly and wanted her in optimal health — just like we would any human in our family! Erika, Mia’s groomer (pictured below) was also instrumental in helping us perfect our prebiotic pet formula.

Not only does our sweet pup not shed, but she has a perpetual lavender scent that follows her around everywhere she goes, making her even more irresistible.
