As you may have deduced, coconut oil is often ingested as a health supplement, providing tons of benefits. But did you know it can also be topically applied to the skin as well?

Crack open one of these brown beauties and spread the innards on your face for a moisturizer that’s way healthier than the store-bought stuff (quite effective, too). It can be used as a conditioner for soft, flowing hair, or even as a sunscreen, having the ability to block about 20% of the sun’s ultraviolet rays.

Okay, you get the picture. It has a lot of health benefits (hence the title of this blog post). So why did we just have to include it in our exclusive Petbiotics formula?

Sodium Lauryl Sulfates (or SLS) is an additive included in almost every cosmetic product that allows the substance to foam or lather. If you’ve ever wondered what causes transparent shampoo to get thick and bubbly in your hair, it’s this chemical. Unfortunately, studies have shown that SLS is at least a skin irritant in concentrated doses, and at worse possibly carcinogenic to humans. Ingesting it may also cause nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. We don’t want our pets anywhere near this stuff.

We’ve kicked SLS to the curb and replaced it instead with coconut oil; the natural lathering agent in all of our Petbiotics and Aleavia products.
